The Ankeny Art Center’s K-12 exhibits are part of our extended outreach programming, intended to introduce and familiarize students with the gallery setting.  Familiarizing students with the gallery will bring about individual self worth of students within the community, increased community involvement; promote culture and diversity, along with the insight of the interworking of becoming an exhibiting artist. The vision is to make creative, unique, and innovative art experiences accessible to every person in the community of Ankeny and surrounding communities. We fully believe that unique art experiences will enrich the lives of the public and teach children how to be better members of the community.

We would like to notify everone that our gallery schedule has changed for the 2012 exhibition season. As of December 2012 our gallery schedule will change to 8 week exhibits. We are extending the exhibit dates for the K-12 art exhibit as well.  The exhibits will become about 4 weeks.

History

The Ankeny Art Center began hosting the K-12 Art Exhibit at the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce in the early 1980’s for the Ankeny School district. We held the Ankeny K-12 show at Kirkendall library for many years until we moved in to our current building across from John Deer in 2001. This move gave us a larger exhibit space, so we opened our doors and asked surrounding area school districts to contribute student art work. We enjoy serving not only our community by our neighbors as well. This was such a great experience and has such a large impact on the Ankeny Community; we wanted to share that art experience with other communities.  The Bondurant-Farrar School District began exhibiting a little over 5 years ago, and North Polk School District shortly before then.

This is such a great experience for our young artists. I love hanging these shows. These students create the most wonderful art.  It is amazing to see the students come in their dresses and or ties for their first show and reception.  They are so proud and excited; they have every reason to be. Friends, family, teachers, and I are running around snapping photos of these great talents.
It is hard not to recognize the magnificent work of the young individuals. These students will one day take these skills and experiences in to our communities.
Familiarizing students with the gallery will increase community involvement from students and families alike. It also promotes awareness of the culture and diversity in our community along with the insight of the interworking of becoming an exhibiting artist
